AECAS, the association that groups independent consultants and engineers specialized in environmental studies and projects related to soil and groundwater, sponsored the seminar on Contaminated Soil organized by ISR (Institute for the sustainability of resources). D. Tomás Barrera, General Manager of Tauw Iberia and President of AECAS, in representation of the association, preceded the session “Contaminated Soil Remediation: case studies”.

The seminar took place on July 6th at the School of forestry engineers (Technical University of Madrid).

During the seminar the final use of remediated soil, assignment of responsibility, the implications derivate from the new law on Waste and Contaminated Soil, and sustainability (economical, environmental and social) were discussed. Besides, the novelties on Contaminated Soil Management and remediation techniques were stated.

Among other things, the participants discussed the legal and strategic framework of Contaminated Soil in Spain including legal liabilities, and risk characterisation and analysis. During the different sessions case studies were set out based on real experiences in Contaminated Soil Management and seen from an urban perspective. Different possibilities of soil remediation were described using new technologies and considering future developments (R&D). Lastly, cases of soil remediation were presented taking into account sustainability.

The seminar counted with the representation of different environmental representatives from national, regional and local administrations and other interested parties as consultants, universities, research institutes, etc. Due to all this, attendance to the seminar was high and the subjects treated were very interesting especially since some points related to the new law on Contaminated Soil were clarified.
